You can set the thickness, diffusion and the density of the hair by using the attributes of Hair System in Maya.
2. Maya Software, Mentalray Shading
In this tutorial, the shading attribute of Hair System in Maya will be explained using both Maya Software and Mentalray.

Hair Color: This sets the color of the hair. You can also apply texture by clicking on the mapping button on the right.
Hair Color Scale: This sets the color of the hair from the root to the tip.
Opacity: This sets the transparency of the hair.
Translucence: This sets the translucence of the hair.
Specular Color: This sets the color of highlights of the hair.
Specular Power: This sets the light penetration of the hair.
Cast Shadow: Using the depth map you can create shadow of the hair.
Diffuse Rand: Randomizes diffuse brightness within a bundle.
Hue Rand: Randomizes the color deviation of the hair.
Sat Rand: Randomizes the deviation of color saturation.
Val Rand: Randomizes the brightness/contrast of the hair.
3. V-Ray Shading
In this tutorial, we will render using the VRay shader specifically made for hair rendering. You can add the VRay attribute by using the editor menu in the Hair System attribute.

Create ‘VRayMtlHair’ and then drag and drop it on the Hair Shader attribute.


Overall Color: This sets the amount that multiplies the color of the overall outcome. Diffuse: This is the color of the hair. Primary, Secondary Specular: This sets the Primary, Secondary Specular (highlight) Transmission: This sets the color of light penetrating the hair.
